My studio residency is in DUMBO, overlooking the waters, close enough to be underneath the Manhattan Bridge. The art dwellers here are involving within their work and the atmosphere is just charging. The view is very technological sublime.
It's the night before I get my first studio space and meeting my fellow studio residents. I have been since December 28, starting my new life in a new city in a new decade. It. Is. Amazing.
A few days ago, up-and-coming musician Jay Reatard passed away at the age of twenty-nine. Death is always a shocker especially of the unexpected and of the talented.

I'm sitting in my New York apartment, going through photographs. Here are some from my"going away" show a couple weeks ago. It was such a great turn out, over a hundred people showed up throughout the night. Thank you.

One of our own Memphians, Tam Tran, a graduate with a degree in journalism from the University of Memphis has been accepted into the Whitney Biennial 2010 exhibition. After showcasing her work at the Power House this pass summer, Tran, along with two other artists were chosen as candidates. For those of you who are not familiar with the Whitney Biennial, it is one of the high honor art exhibition space in New York.
Of the fifty-five artists included in the exhibition, Tran is the youngest (at the age of twenty-three) and is the only Memphian.
This is definitely a big spotlight on the Memphis art scene. The opening will be on February 25, 2010 and the show will run until May 30, 2010.

When people go to films at movie theaters, they look at the projection rather than the blank screen. It's similar to the way people perceive me as, the Other (I'm out of place, I don't feel like I belong, I don't look like everyone else). So I decided to go out and photograph the Summer Drive-In during the morning. I used expired Kodak Portra 160 VC 4x5 film to obtain this desired image:
I made this into a lightbox, which is pretty dandy because of the effects of the projection of the light. Many responded to memories while looking at the blank screen. In turn, they have become the projector.
I had the awesome opportunity to hang out with the Ettes when they were in town playing a gig at the Hi-Tone. They have a song, "Crown of Age" featured in the new film, Whip It. Great band. Period.
