It has been a crazy, few weeks. The one series project morphed into seven different side projects and almost standalone photographs. My fellow New York Studio Residency Program folks and I spent the last week finalizing our group exhibition title and showcards. We are the largest class yet and we are the first class to start using a new title for the program, which is "New York Studio Residency Program."
We're opening Thursday, May 6, 2010, from 4P-9P. It's a One Night Only event! I've also have been thinking of Memphis. I had a Studio Visit yesterday by performance artist (with a background in theater) David Levine. Uncannily declared "If you can find a comfortable place to live and still make your work, you can still keep New York" after many of us studio folks want to stay in New York. I do want to come back to Memphis but I want to push it into something more. The National Endowment for the Arts' Chairman, Rocco Landesman, traveled the country. He briefly mentions Memphis, TN: "He spoke of Memphis, and its three key elements for arts progress. 'They have a vibrant tradition in the arts, a committed private sector and a local political structure that gets it,' Landesman said." You can read the rest of the article here. I feel that there should more opportunities for artists, new places to exhibit, projects and options. Memphis has so much potential energy, its time we shift to a more kinetic energy. With less scientific metaphors. Perhaps. Tommy "Too soon?" Kha |
